What is HoFH?<\/h2>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHoFH is a serious, lifelong, ultra-rare disease that is inherited from your parents, and it means your body is unable to clear bad cholesterol (LDL-C). This can result in plaque deposits in your arteries, called atherosclerosis, and often leads to early heart attacks, strokes, and other diseases involving the arteries.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHoFH is typically managed with multiple treatment approaches, including lifestyle changes, medications and other therapies.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\"5x\"<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHaving HoFH means you have extremely high levels of bad cholesterol (LDL-C), reaching or exceeding levels 5x higher than normal<\/strong> \u2028(>13 mmol\/L<\/span> with HoFH vs 2.5 mmol\/L<\/span> normal).\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\"1\/300,000\"<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHoFH affects around 1 in 300,000 people, many of whom are not diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life which delays critical treatment.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPrevalence is higher in these groups:<\/strong>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1 in 275,000<\/strong> French Canadians
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1 in 30,000<\/strong> Afrikaners in South Africa

How is Ho<\/span>FH different from He<\/span>FH?<\/h2>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHoFH and HeFH can look quite similar; in fact, a significant number of people are initially misdiagnosed, as HoFH can be often mistaken for HeFH.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Who gets it?<\/h2>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHoFH occurs when two mutated copies of FH-causing gene alleles are inherited, one from each parent; those parents most likely have the more common Heterozygous<\/strong> FH.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe correct identification of HoFH can affect entire families, as parents and other relatives may also be identified with FH. A person with HoFH may have siblings with HeFH.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

What are the risks?<\/h2>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHoFH can progress quickly and have lifelong effects, leading to premature heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular events, often within the first two decades of life.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tA missed diagnosis, misdiagnosis, or suboptimal treatment can allow the disease to progress.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n

At Birth<\/h3>\n
\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHigh levels of bad cholesterol (LDL-C)\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExtremely high levels of bad cholesterol (LDL-C as high as 13 mmol\/L in an unborn baby and 18 mmol\/L in a newborn)\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMany cases are not diagnosed in childhood, when the progression of the disease may still be preventable\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

During childhood<\/h3>\n
\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDeposits of cholesterol develop in skin, tendons, and blood vessels\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCholesterol accumulates in the valves, leading to heart issues\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMay experience a heart attack before the age of 10\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMany patients with HoFH are not diagnosed until they suffer an event\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

During adolescence<\/h3>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFirst heart attack, stroke or other heart-related event\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCholesterol and calcium deposits continue to develop\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWorsening build up of fibrous tissue and inflammation can lead to heart defects\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMany people with HoFH are not correctly diagnosed until they become adults, which delays critical treatment of their LDL-C\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
